On October 7th in 2018, Patrick Kane and Auston Matthews took over the final two minutes of the Chicago Blackhawks home opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs, putting on a spectacular display of scoring.
The exchange began with Kane sniping the tying goal past Garret Sparks with the Chicago net empty and 84 seconds remaining. Matthews answered 18 seconds later, putting their 6th goal past Cam Ward and restoring his team's one goal lead whilst taunting the Chicago fans with a bend of the ear to emphasize the silence in the building.
However, 33 seconds later Kane struck again with the Chicago net empty. Kane celebrated by mocking Matthews' bend of the ear from moments earlier, which was met with a grin by Matthews on the Leafs' bench.
Toronto enjoyed the last laugh that night, scoring 19 seconds into overtime to beat the Blackhawks 7-6. The goal was assisted by Matthews.
That's today in NHL history.
